When I recently had brunch in my favorite Italian restaurant in Manhattan, Scarpetta, I tried their avocado toast for the first time. I must admit, it was heaven from the first bite! I now understand why millennials are hooked to avocado. That being said, in the rest of this post, I will share with you some of the easy tricks that will allow you to prepare the perfect avocado toast in the comfort of your own home.
Start with the Right Avocado
If you want to have an avocado toast for a trendy brunch in NYC, you need to focus on one thing – the right avocado! Buying a good avocado can be tricky, especially if you know nothing about the fruit. Fresh is best! Squeeze the avocado and see to it that it is not too hard or too soft. Look at the skin and see if it looks good. If there are discolorations, take it as a sign that it is not fresh. The skin should be slightly pebbled but not too rough and should not have large indentations.
Do Not Overload with Avocado
Even if it is an avocado toast after all, this does not mean that you need to overload the bread with avocado. Keep in mind that while it is nutrient-dense, avocado is also high in fat, so you have to eat it in moderation. It is best to use only 1/3 to ½ of an avocado for two slices of bread.
Upgrade your Ingredients
A classic avocado toast is pretty much simple. Aside from the avocado and the bread, it can contain olive oil and sea salt for added flavor. If you want to make it better, you have to upgrade the ingredients that are used. Do not be afraid to experiment with different ingredients that will make the avocado toast taste even better.
Among others, some of the ingredients that you could add to your avocado toast include chili flakes, cream cheese, goat cheese, almonds, yogurt, salsa, crushed tortilla chips, basil, and strawberries. Consider adding ingredients that will not only elevate taste but also the texture of the toast that you are making. It will also be good to balance the toast by adding sources of protein to make it a healthy and hearty meal. Eggs and meat strips will be good to have in your avocado toast.
Find the Right Bread
Another important element of an avocado toast is the bread that will be used. Processed or white bread should be avoided, especially if you are eating avocado toast because you believe that it is a healthy treat. It will be good to use 100% wheat bread or gluten-free bread. They will be more filling. Thick and crusty bread, such as sourdough, will also be great.
Keep in mind the tips that have been mentioned above to make the perfect avocado toast! It is sure to make a mouthwatering meal not just for brunch but perfect to be enjoyed any time of the day!
